about

All sounds in this piece were generated by acoustic scanning of (or, more clearly: by recording the sounds of moving my index finger over) stacked pieces of an artwork made from Welsh Slate, played at 0.2 times the original speed. The Drone was generated by Paulstretch of the sound of some individual pieces.

The rhythm arises from the thickness of the individual pieces and by the speed the finger moves over it. The slaty cleavage into layers of a certain thickness was not caused by sedimentation, but by metamorphic processes. Therefore, the piece does not directly map geological time (the slate was formed in the Paleozoic), but inherent properties of the material, and the transformative work of the sculptor. I hope nobody feels offended or disturbed by this work, especially the animals that might live within the slate structure.
